“Terms & Conditions Apply”
Not so long ago, we voice artists would have earned most of our pay-checks (and they were actual checks) from recording TV and radio commercials.
That now seems like a distant memory. BUT, commercials are still the most important discipline for a voice actor. You can hear the range of vocal styles on my commercial demo below.
You have a 30 second script. You need someone who can immediately understand which bits of that script are most important.
As voice artists, we know our delivery and tone has to be completely different, depending on whether it’s a radio or a TV commercial.
We need an inbuilt clock. I’ve lost count of the number of times a producer has asked me to lose or gain a second from my read. That all comes with experience.
It’s like a CV (or resume depending on which side of the Atlantic you are) and a portfolio all wrapped into an audio package lasting 1 minute and 10 seconds (and woe betide you if it’s longer than that).
I need it to show potential clients what we sound like, our vocal range as well as give them a little insight into our personality … and all within 70 precious seconds!
And the disclaimers: you know, the fast-talking bits which you sometimes get at the end of a commercial. For clients, that can be the most important copy of all. Without it, the script might be breaching broadcasting rules. You need someone with perfect diction to make sure those messages get across.
Feel free to have a listen, and if you like what you hear, you can get in touch via the button below.
